Mathis Earns Third Rookie Honor, Leads Hawks to Two Victories

 

West Hartford, CT - Freshman guard Ilicia Mathis earned her third America East Rookie of the Week honor this season, as announced by the America East Conference on Monday afternoon. Mathis led the team with an average of 14.0 points-per-game over two games last week.

 

She opened the week with a 17-point effort on the road, tying her career-high, at UMBC. Mathis then followed that up with an 11-point outing at Albany in the only back-to-back road games for the women's basketball team in conference play. Also, against Albany, Mathis pulled down a career-high seven rebounds.

 

For the week, she shot 10-of-23 from the field (43 percent), 3-of-9 from long range (33 percent) and was a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line. She also grabbed four steals and passed for four assists in the two games combined. In conference play alone, the rookie leads the team in scoring at 12.4 points-per-game, a half point more than Erica Beverly who is second. Also in conference games only, she is averaging 45.4 percent from the field (49-of-108), 50 percent from long range (19-of-38) and 76 percent from the free throw line (32-of-42), while averaging 3.9 rebounds and grabbing 20 steals and 11 assists. 

 

The women's basketball team will play two games this week, the first against the only undefeated team in the America East Conference, Boston University, on Tuesday night. The Hawks and Terriers will showdown live on Comcast Sports Network at 7:00 p.m. Hartford will then play its final regular season road game at Stony Brook University on Saturday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m.
