The Hartford baseball team has announced its schedule of events for Alumni Weekend this fall as they help kick off "Hawktober" on the weekend of October 1-3.
For most fans of the National Pastime, Alaska does not come to mind immediately when thinking of baseball hotbeds. For collegiate ballplayers looking to make an impression on the decision makers at the next level, however, nothing could be further from the truth. The Last Frontier is home to the Alaska Baseball League, one of the most prestigious amateur leagues in the country. For the first time, a University of Hartford player was selected to play in the league, and Simon Kudernatsch has represented the Hawks well, recently being named a Second Team All-ABL performer.
The University of Hartford baseball team will hold its Tryout Clinic for all undergraduate students at the University who would like an opportunity to possibly play Division I baseball for the Hawks on September 4.
Head coach Jeff Calcaterra and the Hartford baseball program announced the signing of four incoming freshmen for the upcoming school year on Wednesday. Two pitchers – Zach Ferris and Alex Gouin – are joined by infielder Brian Estevez and outfielder Mark Sorbara as the newest members of the Hawks. The four will be in uniform for the upcoming fall ball season and the 2011 Hartford campaign.
After capping off his freshman season at the University of Hartford by being named the last America East Rookie of the Week for the year, pitcher Anthony Mannuccia was named to the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League Eastern All-Star Team. Mannuccia made six starts for the Sag Harbor Whalers over the first half, going 1-2 with a 2.61 ERA over 41.1 innings.
