New Britain, CT – The University of Hartford men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Central Connecticut State University Mini-Meet on Saturday morning at Stanley Quarter Park. In the final meet before the America East Championship, the men placed eighth out of 11 squads and the women finished sixth out of 11 teams.
Freshman Kayla Koonz led the Hawks for the third time this season with a 30th place finish overall, crossing the line in 11:02.56 on the three kilometer course. Hartford scored 158 points, 23 points behind fifth place Central Connecticut and 59 points ahead of Holy Cross in seventh. The Quinnipiac women won the meet with a score of 32 points.
Senior Ariana Bass was the second best finisher for the Hawks on Saturday, placing 36th in a time of 11:12.42. Seniors Melanie Wilson and Kaycee Martinez and junior Erica Paulson rounded out the scorers for the Hartford women. Wilson placed 40th overall in a time of 11:18.05, Martinez took 44th place (11:24.91) and Paulson clocked-in at 11:35.39 for a 52nd place finish.
Junior Biliana Mihaylova and sophomore Larisa Woykovsky completed the Hawks' top-seven finishers. Mihaylova was the 67th runner to cross at 11:53.97 and Woykovsky ran a time of 11:55.63, good for a 70th place finish.
Junior Jonas Hampton was the top finisher for the Hawks for the fourth time this season, pacing the Hartford men with a time of 15:51.06 in the five kilometer course and finishing 26th overall. The Hawks recorded 211 points, finishing 27 points ahead of Long Island, the ninth place team, and 28 points behind of seventh place Rhode Island.
Sophomore Andrew Chalmers was the second Hawk – and 46th overall runner – to cross (16:10.50) and junior Josh Hummel finished 51st overall in 16:10.28. Rookie Kevin Brandon and senior Weston Melnik also scored for the Hawks. Brandon raced to a 16:25.56 time, placing 55th the 5,000-meter course while Melnik was the 57thunner to cross the line clocking-in at 16:26.79.
Rounding out the top seven were rookies Wayne Lawrence and Matthew Le. Lawrence placed 61st (16:32.03) and Le placed 72nd (16:54.02).
The Hartford cross country teams will compete at the conference championships held at the Catamount Family Center in Williston, VT on Saturday, October 31.
