Hampton and Bass Lead Hawks at 2009 America East Cross Country Championship

Burlington, VT – The University of Hartford men's and women's cross country teams ran at the 2009 America East Cross Country Championship hosted by the University of Vermont. All nine programs competed in the 2009 championship held in Williston, VT. Both Hartford squads placed ninth. The Binghamton University men and Stony Brook University women took home the championship crowns on Saturday morning.

For the Hartford men, Jonas Hampton was the first runner Hawk and 46th overall runner to cross the finish line. The junior paced the Hawks on the eight kilometer course with a time of 27:22.30. Hampton has been the top-finisher in five of Hartford's six meets this season.

Senior Weston Melnik, junior Josh Hummel and freshman Wayne Lawrence turned in the second, third and fourth fastest times for the Hawks. Melnik recorded a time of 27:47.10 for a 55th place finish, Hummel clocked in at 28:11.40 placing 61st overall  and Lawrence ran the 8k in 28:35.30 taking 67th place.

Rounding out the Hartford top-seven was freshman Robert Giuliani and sophomore Eric Flaman, finishing back-to-back at 72nd and 73rd place. Giuliani recorded a time of 29:05.10 while Flaman ran a time of 29:05.40.

Hartford senior Ariana Bass led the women to a 51st place finish, pacing the Hawks with a time of 20:53.60 in the 5050-meter course, marking the third time the senior has been the top-finisher this season.

Following Bass was a pair of seniors, Melanie Wilson and Erica Paulson. Wilson finished 54th overall in 20:58.50 and Paulson took the 63rd spot with a time of 21:12.10.  Freshman Kayla Koonz was the 67th overall runner and fourth Hawk to cross in 21:20.80. Seniors Kaycee Martinez and Stefanie Lombardi were the next runners to cross, finishing back-to-back at 72nd and 73rd place. Martinez crossed at 21:54.00 while Lombardi finished in 22:04.00. Junior Biliana Mihaylova rounded out the top-seven for the Hawks placing 79th (22:55.40) and Woykovksy finished 80th (23:10.20).

The NCAA Regionals are next up for members of the Hartford cross country teams. The Northeast Regional will take place at Boston's Franklin Park on Saturday, November 14.
