Men’s Soccer Perfects Construction Skills; Joins in Habitat for Humanity Effort

Hartford, CT- Members of the University of Hartford men's soccer team recently participated in a Habitat for Humanity construction effort, assisting in the construction of a house on Guilford Street in Hartford.

On Saturday, December 5th, 12 men's soccer players and assistant coach Ryan Carr spent more than seven hours working with construction crews at the Hartford home. The members of the men's soccer team who participated were Jamie Thomas, Sam Groves, Pat Boucher, Jorge Rodriguez, Matt Hament, Aaron Utman, Jordan Bar, Kevin Lewis, James Stamopolous, Andrew Liapis, Ben Poppen and Anthony Buehler.

Players worked on projects that included building a porch, installing dry wall brackets, wall framing and moving concrete and timber, among other tasks. “It was fun and rewarding for all of us to get together and meet some people in the community, including one of the people who will be living in the home,” said Groves, a junior. “It felt really good to do that as a team and it was an eye opening experience for all of us.”

Hartford closed out the 2009 regular season ranked third in the conference standings while earning a berth in the America East Championship for the third-straight season. Following a 2-1 defeat of Boston University in the quarterfinals, the Hawks fell to Stony Brook in a penalty kick shootout in the semifinals of the America East Championship. Hartford finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 8-7-3 overall, including a 4-2-1 mark in the America East. The 13 points recorded during conference play is the most since 2003 when they went 4-3-1 in league play.
