Hartford, CT – The University of Hartford hosted the Hartford Hawks Riverfront Cross Country Festival on Saturday afternoon, located in Hartford, CT. Six teams competed overall, with the University of Rhode Island taking the top-finish for the women and Hartford claiming the team victory for the men's race.
For the men's race, the University of Rhode Island placed second overall, while Framingham State finished third.
Hartford sophomore Andrew Chalmers and junior Jonas Hampton paced the Hartford men with first and second place finishes en route to the Hawks' top-finish on Saturday. Chalmers raced to a personal-best 26:20.6 finish in the 8,000-meter course, while Hampton crossed the line at 26:37.5, also a personal-best performance. Rookie Kevin Brandon was the third Hawk to run through the finish line. Brandon recorded a time of 27:12.7, placing sixth overall.
Weston Melnik and Josh Hummel finished back-to-back at eighth and ninth overall. Melnik was the fourth Hawk to finish at 27:15.2 and Hummel rounded out the top-five Hartford finishers at 27:23.1.
Completing the Hartford top-seven finishers was junior Matthew Le and sophomore Wayne Lawrence. Le ran the 8k course in a time of 27:51.2 while Lawrence hustled to finish at 28:06.6.
The University of Rhode Island took first overall on the women's side, sweeping the overall top-four finishes. Junior Mary Najarian took home the individual title, completing the 5,000-meter course in 18:54.1.
The Hartford women finished second in the Riverfront event out of a field of three teams, and Saint Joseph's College taking the third place spot. Ariana Bass led the Hawks in their home event as she was the first Hawk to cross the finish line for the second-straight time this season. The senior posted a time of 20:07.1 in the 5k distance, placing fifth overall out of 30 competitors.
Following Bass taking the seventh, eighth and ninth overall spots and earning points for the Hawks were Stefanie Lombardi, Kayla Koonz and Melanie Wilson. Lombardi, a senior, clocked in at 20:25.4 and Koonz finished just moments away with a time of 20:36.7. Wilson recorded a pace of 6:40, crossing the finish line at 20:41.9. Also racking up points for the Hartford women was senior Kaycee Martinez who placed 11th overall with her time of 20:54.9.
Biliana Mihaylova and Erica Paulson rounded out the top seven finishers for the Hawks, finishing 14th and 15th overall. Mihaylova recorded a time of 21:12.2 while Paulson clocked-in at 21:17.9.
The Hartford men's and women's cross country teams have a three-week layover to train for the New England Championship, which will be held on Saturday, October 10 at Franklin Park in Boston, MA.
