PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Hartford track and field teams sent members of the squads to Philadelphia to compete at the Penn Relays. The annual event, which is the oldest and largest track and field event in the United States, began on Thursday, April 22.
The Hartford women kicked off the three-day event on Thursday afternoon as Kaycee Martinez, Nicole McClintock, Ariana Bass and Priscilla Appiagyei competed in the 4x400-meter relay. The squad raced to a 3:56.48 finish in the event, a season-best time, and placed 67th overall.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team took the track on Friday and placed 48th out of 81 squads with a time of 3:19.76. Anderson Emerole, Mike DuPaul, Christopher Carr and Warren Lane raced to finish third in their heat and outran America East foes UMBC by more than one second. The Hawks also finished in front of conference member Maine in the final rankings.
The Hartford men's 4x800-meter relay teams competed on Saturday, the last day of the 116th annual competition. The foursome, led by Wayne Lawrence, Christopher Rodriguez, Robert Giuliani and Mike DuPaul as the anchor, combined for a school record breaking time of 8:01.85 and landed a 35th place finish. The squad shattered the previous program-best time of 8:18.96 that held its place in the record books for five years.
The Hawks head back to Connecticut for the Yale Springtime Invitational in New Haven on Sunday. Hartford runners who did not compete at the Penn Relays will have fresh legs for the squads' final meet in the Nutmeg State.
