WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Hartford Student Athletics Advisory Committee (SAAC) held the third annual Howie's Sportsmanship Academy on Saturday, December 10, 2012. More than 100 youth from throughout the Hartford region attended a free workshop run by student-athletes from various sports.
During the workshop participants learned several lessons on sportsmanship through interactive stations. Members of Hartford's SAAC utilized skits, jeopardy, video and creativity to portray their lessons about being a good sport on the field and on the court.
Howie the Hawks also interacted with the youth, assisting with poster making while joining in skits and playing a few games of tag with participants. In addition to learning about positive sportsmanship, there was also a station where kids learned about fire, home, medical and bicycle safety.
Following the workshop participants were invited to join the members of SAAC in cheering on the men's basketball team as they took on Niagara. The student-athletes and kids cheered together in the stands while also displaying posters they had made during the workshop.
Participants also received free t-shirts for attending Howie's Sportsmanship Academy. The youth and student-athletes wore those t-shirts, which included the slogan 'Respect: It's the Name of the Game', during the men's basketball game.
