Behrens, Class of '85, Explains Her Role with the NBA

During the Summer of 2012, Hartford Athletics will catch up with former University of Hartford student-athletes who have made themselves into distinguished alumni since graduation. These former Hawks will be recognized on both HartfordHawks.com and the official Hartford Hawks YouTube page, youtube.com/hartfordathletics.

Next up on our list of alumni is Kathy Behrens, a member of the class of 1985. Behrens was a two-sport athlete at the University of Hartford, playing on the women's basketball team for two years while also being a member of the Hawks' tennis team.

While at Hartford, Behrens was an active member of the student body, getting involved in student government in addition to her commitment to academics and athletics. In her senior year, Behrens served as president of the Student Government Association on her way to earning a degree in special education.

Behrens credits her ability to balance her busy schedule as a collegian partially to her coach, Hartford Hall of Famer Roger Wickman. Wickman coached Behrens in both basketball and tennis, tailoring her practice schedule when the two seasons overlapped.

“I found the people at Hartford to be at times the most challenging and the most supportive people, and that's just a great combination for me,” Behrens said. “If people are going to challenge you, you need the support as well. That was pretty consistent, especially with somebody like Roger.”

She was also helped on the academic side by her advisor, Professor S. Edward Weinswig. “He made sure I graduated,” Behrens said of Weinswig.

Since graduating from the University of Hartford, Behrens has held a number of positions that have enabled her to lead a life of public service. She started her professional life as a fundraiser for the United Way in New York City. She also served on the administration of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and as the leader of New York Cares, a nonprofit organization in the city.

Behrens currently serves as the Executive Vice President, Social Responsibility and Player Programs for the National Basketball Association. At the NBA, Behrens is involved with NBA Cares and ihoops. Behrens oversees the off-court activities of NBA players, working with global philanthropy and player marketing as well as helping them handle the spotlight that comes both on and off the court. She also works with player development, aiding players in the transition into and out of the NBA lifestyle, in regards to both finances and publicity.

Behrens has been at the NBA for 12 years. Additionally, she is a trustee of the National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., as well as a member of the University of Hartford Board of Regents. Behrens currently resides outside of New York City with her husband and five-year old twins.
