Hawks Topple Four School Records at New England Championships

COMPLETE RESULTS

BOSTON, Mass.
—Junior distance runner Megan Barry earned All-New England honors with a school-record run in the women's 3,000 meters at the 45th New England Indoor Track and Field Championship at Boston University. Barry and the Hartford track and field squads set four new school marks at the two-day meet Friday and Saturday.

Barry, a junior from South Yarmouth, Mass., finished eighth in the 3,000 meters with a school-record time of 9:58.40. With her place, Barry ran her way to All-New England distinction. With her time, she became the first Hartford woman to crack the 10-minute mark in the event, breaking Elizabeth Foster's previous school record, 10:03.59, set in 2009.

In addition to Barry's record, the Hawks also notched school records in the women's 4x400-meter relay, the women's distance medley relay and the men's distance medley relay.

The women's 4x400 relay set the school record by more than one full second. The foursome of sophomore Tiffany Harrison, junior Rebecca Cheatham and seniors Natalie Bonham and Priscilla Appiagyei passed the baton around the track in 3:53.17, lowering the previous school record of 3:54.21, which had stood since 2008.

Bonham also helped the Hawk women post a record in the distance medley relay. Bonham, sophomore Sam Crisafulli, freshman Aleixa Diaz and junior Jennifer Flores combined for a time of 12:16.95, nearly three seconds ahead of the previous Hartford mark.

The men's distance medley accounted for the fourth Hawk record of the meet. Senior Wayne Lawrence, freshman Eric Tahtamoni, senior Chris Rodriguez and freshman Michael MacLean teamed up to post a time of 10:11.37, more than one second better than the old mark.

Also in the relay, MacLean and Rodriguez, along with senior Robert Giuliani and freshman Daniel Fernandez, teamed up for a time of 7:55.02 in the 4x800 relay.

The Hawks also received solid performances from student-athletes in individual events. Along with Barry's run in the 3,000 meters, Harrison and Appiagyei ran in the women's 400-meter dash, freshman Kafesha Thomas sprinted in the women's 60-meter dash and junior John Busque ran in the men's 5,000 meters.

Harrison finished 10th in the 400 meters with an indoor career-best time of 57.34 seconds, just three one-hundredths of a second off the school record of 57.31, set by Appiagyei in 2011. Appiagyei took 13th place in the event with a season-best time of 57.66.

In the 60-meter dash, Thomas posted a time of 8.20 seconds. Busque wrapped up the individual performances for the Hawks at the meet with a time of 15:23.97 in the men's 5,000 meters.
