KINGSTON, RI - The University of Hartford men's basketball team dropped a 94-72 final to the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday night at the Ryan Center.
Junior guard Joe Zeglinski provided the highlight for the Hawks, scoring his 1,000th career point on his second shot of the game, a three-pointer from the right wing. He becomes the 21st player in school history to reach the milestone and is the second fastest to the mark in the Division I era. Zeglinski needed 70 games to score 1,000 points while Vin Baker needed 69.
Hartford (1-4 overall) shot 46 percent from the floor and 37 percent from behind the arc. Zeglinski finished with a team-high 20 points and added five rebounds and four assists. Seniors Michael Turner and Jaret von Rosenberg also finished in double figures with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Rhode Island (4-1 overall) held a 42-30 edge on the glass and a 25-9 advantage in second chance points. Keith Cothran led five Rams in double figures with 22 points.
Hartford stayed with Rhode Island through the first seven minutes of the contest, as a three-pointer by Zeglinski tied the game at 13-13 with 12:44 to go in the half. The Rams, however, broke the game open with a 21-5 run over the next six minutes, taking a 34-18 lead on a trey by Jimmy Baron with 6:18 to play. Baron finished the contest with six three-pointers, four of which came in the first half.
Rhode Island took a 47-35 lead into the locker room at the half. Zeglinski kept the Hawks in the game by scoring 15 points in the stanza, all from behind the three-point line.
The Rams led by as many as 26 points in the second half and never let their lead dip below double digits. Rhode Island shot 52 percent from the floor in the contest and outscored Hartford 41-28 in the paint.
Hartford will next travel to Philadelphia for the final two games of the Philly Hoop Group Classic. The Hawks will face NJIT on Friday, November 28 at noon and either Monmouth or Niagara on Saturday, November 29. Both games will be played at The Palestra.
