2004 ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES
The 2004 inductees listed below, are the fourth class to be inducted and will join 72 student-athletes, coaches and administrators previously elected into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. The selections for the Hall of Fame are made by a committee representing alumni, faculty, administration, past and present athletics staff and former student-athletes.
Mary-Jane Besselink Bravakis '93 - Women's Basketball Excellence
? Played center on the women's basketball team from 1989-93.
? Finished career ranked fifth in points scored (1,205) and second in rebounds (817).
? Ended career third among all-time leaders in field goals (512) and rebounding average (7.7 RPG), and is fifth in blocked shots (65). Overall, ranks among the program's top 10 in 11 career categories.
? Averaged in double figures in three of four years, including a career-best 14.2 PPG as a senior.
? Pulled down a career high 8.6 RPG as a freshman.
? Served as a team captain as a junior and senior.
? Was the student-athlete representative for the Athletics Council for three years.
? Graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences.
Larry H. Griffiths '91 - Men's Baseball Excellence
? Played forward on the men's basketball team from 1987-91.
? One of 19 1,000 point scorers, stands 13th on the all-time list with 1,181 points.
? With 693 rebounds (sixth all-time), is one of 15 Hartford players to exceed 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in his career.
? Ranks second all-time in blocked shots (122), and is fifth in field goal percentage (.523).
? Earned All-North Atlantic honors in 1990.
? Was a team captain as a senior.
? In 1991 was awarded the Departments ECAC Medal of Merit, the highest honor given to a senior student-athlete. The award combines athletics and academic excellence.
? Graduated from the Barney School of Business and Public Administration.
Anthony C. Harrington '77 - Wrestling and Club Football Excellence
? Excelled as a wrestler and club football player with the Hawks from 1974-76.
? As a wrestler, placed in New England for three consecutive years, posting a second place finish in 1974, a fourth place finish in 1975 and third place finish in 1976.
? Qualified to compete in the Division II national championship in 1974 and 1976.
? Posted a 12-4 record as a freshman and an 8-2 mark as a sophomore.
? Named a team co-captain in 1975.
? As a club football player, was the only unanimous All-Conference selection in 1975. Twice named conference player-of-the-week that year.
? Tabbed an Honorable Mention All-Conference performer in 1976.
? Post-graduation, has earned a highly regarded reputation as a singer and performer.
? Is heavily involved with minority affairs.
? Graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences.
Rob Jachym '96 - Men's Soccer Excellence
? A high scoring forward for the Hawks in 1992, and from 1994-96.
? One of seven All-Americans in program history.
? Turned in a career point total of 102 (42 goals/18 assists), seventh among the program's all-time leading scorers.
? Enjoyed an outstanding senior season. Totaled 43 points and 17 goals, third highest in a single season. Named All-American, All-New England, the America East Player of the Year and the All-America East that year.
? Led Hartford to 17 wins and an NCAA final eight appearance in 1996. The Hawks also reached the NCAA tournament during Jachym's freshman year.
? A former team captain.
? Played professionally for the New England Revolution of the MLS.
? Graduated from the Barney School of Business and Public Administration.
Scott LaRock '99 - Baseball Excellence
? Pitched for the Hartford baseball team from 1991-94.
? Stands as Hartford's career leader in four categories including wins (19) and strikeouts (182).
? Posted eight wins (third highest in a single season) and 69 strikeouts (highest in a single season) as a senior. Was a team captain and team MVP that year.
? Named All-New England in 1993.
? Earned a spot on the 1992 ECAC Division I All-Tournament team and the 1994 North Atlantic Conference All-Tournament team.
? Drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 1994 and spent a brief time in the minor leagues before retiring.
? Graduated from the Barney School of Business and Public Administration.
Joseph H. Morley '71 - Baseball and Club Football Excellence
? Competed for four years on both the club football and baseball teams for the Hawks.
? Earned the distinction of being a two sport captain and team MVP.
? Played offensive tackle, defensive end and punter on the football team. Named a captain in 1970 and MVP in 1969.
? Played first base on the baseball team. Named a captain and was the team MVP in 1971.
? As a baseball player, hit .328 as a senior and .313 as a junior.
? Paced the club in putouts as a junior and senior, and fielding percentage as a junior. With a .984 fielding percentage, stands fourth all-time among Hartford record books.
? An active student leaders.
? Graduated from the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions.
Special Awards
Richard J. Cardin '62 - Vincent Brown Coffin Award
Richard Cardin, a member of the University’s Board of Regents and the Steering Committee for the Campaign of Commitment, has enjoyed over 35 years of success in the business world.
His work included 32 years with United Parcel Service. He held several senior positions with the company while assigned to the corporate office for 18 years, working domestically and abroad. After taking an early retirement from UPS in 1995, he worked as a management consultant for three years. He is currently the managing member of C & C Stables, LLC, a thoroughbred racing corporation.
Cardin established a campaign to create an endowed faculty chair for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University. He also sponsors a speaker series (“The Cardin Writing Series”) that brings poets and fiction writers to campus.
Richard holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Hartford. He was a member of the men’s basketball team for one season and the men’s tennis team for three seasons.
Patricia A. McKinley '72 - A. Peter LoMaglio Award
Pat McKinley is a member of the University’s Board of Regents (since 1992), as well as the Board of Trustees of the Hartford College for Women (since 1980). She has been involved with a wide variety of committees and played a number of roles during her tenures as a Board member.
The majority of Pat’s adult life has been devoted to volunteerism. Those organizations that currently benefit from her involvement include United Way of Central Naugatuck Valley, Child Guidance Clinic of Greater Waterbury, Pastoral Department for Small Christian Communities (Archdiocese of Hartford), St. Thomas Becket Church (Cheshire, CT), Waterbury Hospital Health Center, Union College and the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.
Pat has been continually recognized for her contributions. Among her awards are the Marcia A. Savage Alumna Award form the Hartford College for Women (2001), the Distinguished Service Award form the University of Hartford Alumni Association (1996) and the community Volunteer of the Year Award from the United Way of Central Naugatuck Valley (1995).
Pat earned an associate’s degree from the Hartford College for Women in 1972, a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Union College in 1974 and a master’s degree in education from Harvard University in 1982.
Robert A. Guyon '69 - Pioneer Award
Robert Guyon was the “founding father” of the University’s club football team in the 1960s. He researched, organized and raised money for the team’s creation in 1967. He was president of the club from 1966 to 1969 and was co-captain of the team for the 1967 and 1968 seasons.
Guyon, an involved student leader while at Hartford, was given the Robert Hanley Award for his efforts in developing the club football program. The Award is presented to the student who most exemplifies the motto of the University ? “For Humanity.”
Though he graduated in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in biology education, Guyon’s creation lived on 16 seasons. Over 150 students went on to play club football at the University, and the team went on to win a New England Intercollegiate Club Football Championship and at one time attained a national ranking.
Guyon has spent the last 22 years working as a physician assistant in orthopedics at numerous hospitals across the state, most recently at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington, CT. Prior to becoming a physician assistant, he was a teacher, coach and club supervisor at Weaver High School for 10 years and was a high school curriculum writer for the University of Connecticut’s School of Allied Health Professions.
