NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Nick MacDonald shot a second-round 73 to finish 12th overall in the 36-hole Yale Spring Opener over the weekend. MacDonald fired a 74 in the first round, finishing just six strokes back of Justin Hughes of Central Connecticut. As a team, the Hawks finished seventh out of the 12 participating schools.
The tournament showcased some of the best overall golf the Hartford men's team has played thus far this season. None of the four Hawks in competition carded a round higher than 77, and the lowest placing Hawk - freshman
Michael DiMeglio - finished tied for 33rd. Only two teams - first place Yale and third place Harvard - had their lowest placing individual performer card a better score.
Zack Ungvarsky finished close behind the pace-setter MacDonald. After a first-round 76, Ungvarsky rebounded to shoot a 74 in his second loop. He finished three strokes back of MacDonald, tied for 19th place overall.
Maki Kobayashi followed a first-round 76 with a second-round 75, leaving himself tied for 24th. DiMeglio put up matching scorecards of 77 to finish in a tie for 33rd overall.
The consistent play was an encouraging sign for Hartford, which wrapped up its regular season with the tournament. The Hawks will next be in action April 10 at the New England Division I Championships.
