WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – After completing their senior season on the Hartford men's golf team, Nick MacDonald, Maki Kobayashi and Zack Ungvarsky were honored as All-New England Division I Golf Association players, the Association announced on Tuesday. MacDonald and Kobayashi were named to the first team, while Ungvarsky earned recognition on the second team. Twelve players from six different schools were honored altogether.
MacDonald led the Hawks with four top-10 finishes, including a seventh-place finish at the America Sky Championship to conclude the season. That came on the heels of a sixth-place tie at the New England Division I Championships on April 10-11. MacDonald was Hartford's most consistent player throughout the season, firing rounds in the seventies in eight of his final nine collegiate rounds. He also carded the best round of the season for Hartford, a 65 at the ODU/Seascape Collegiate Invitational in October.
MacDonald has been named to the PING New England Division I All-Region Team in each of his first three seasons in West Hartford. The Lebanon, N.H. native was named to the All-America Sky All-Tournament Team thanks to his seventh-place finish at the championship tournament. He was also America Sky Player of the Week after his performance at the ODU/Seascape Collegiate Invitational.
Kobayashi experienced the highlight of Hartford's season when he won a playoff to take the title at the New England Division I Championship on April 11. Kobayashi shot back-to-back rounds of 72 to grab the championship, the only individual title of the season for the Hawks. Kobayashi also had a top-10 finish at the Army/Mule Kicker Fall Classic in September, finishing in a tie for sixth place with a 73-70--143. That second round card of 70 marked the lowest round of the season for the senior.
A two-time PING New England Division I All-Region Team honoree, Kobayashi was the America Sky Player of the Week as a sophomore on September 18, 2007. The native of Newington, CT played to a 78.04 stroke average on the season, third on the team behind MacDonald and Ungvarsky.
Ungvarsky had two top-10 finishes in his first four tournaments of the year, including a fourth-place finish at the Army/Mule Kicker Fall Classic. He added two more top-20 finishes, and wrapped up his season with a tie for 30th place at the America Sky Championship. Ungvarsky was the only Hawk aside from MacDonald to fire a round under 70 all season, carding a 68 in the first round of the Army/Mule Kicker Fall Classic.
A native of Wilmington, Mass., Ungvarsky also earned a top-10 finish this season at the Connecticut Cup, finishing in a tie for seventh with a 74-73-75—222. His 76.96 stroke average was second on the team to MacDonald among players who completed at least 15 rounds.
