WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Finding the back of the net has been no problem for the Hartford women's soccer team when they've been on the road thus far in the young 2010 season. The Hawks scored five goals in two games at the Temple Owls Tournament last weekend. At home, though, it has been a different story as the Hawks were shutout at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium for the second time in two tries this season, falling 2-0 to La Salle on the opening day of the Hartford Hawks Soccer Weekend.
The Hawks had chances early on, as reigning America East Player of the Week
Breeanna Robinson had three looks at the goal, only missing her fourth goal of the season thanks to a spectacular save by La Salle's Gabby Pachtigian.
With just over 30 minutes gone, La Salle's Jourdan McVicker gathered herself at the top of the box and launched a rocket over the right shoulder of Hartford goalkeeper
Lauren Brodeur. Brodeur dove and got a hand on the ball, but it had too much on it as it kept moving into the left corner of the net.
The Hawks went into intermission down just one, but La Salle doubled their lead almost immediately in the second half. On their first offensive possession of the period, the Explorers worked the ball in to Anna Dolhansky, who laced the ball to the back of the net from about 15 yards out.
Little went the Hawks' way on Friday, although head coach
John Natale did single out
Shealagh Begleyas having put together a particularly strong defensive effort. Begley has started all four games for the Hawks, her first four collegiate starts.
Hartford and La Salle each took seven shots, but only two of the Hawks' efforts went on goal. Brodeur finished with four saves.
The Hawks have the day off tomorrow before concluding the Hartford Hawks Soccer Weekend on Sunday, when they will take on the Columbia Lions at 1 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting HartfordHawksTickets.com. They can also be purchased at the gate. Youth soccer players who attend the game wearing their jersey can get in for just $2, with their families paying just $4 per ticket.
