Strong Second Half Pushes W Soccer Over Holy Cross

WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to defeat Holy Cross 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field.

Freshman Laura Guigli scored both goals for the Hawks in the second stanza. Hartford won its second straight game to improve to 4-8-0 on the season while Holy Cross dropped to 2-8-2.

While the clouds had cleared by gametime, heavy morning rains made for wet playing conditions by kickoff. The Hawks got on the scoreboard first when junior Meagan Riemer put a shot on goal that skipped off the hands of goalkeeper Jessica Pietrowicz in the ninth minute. Riemer shot to the low right corner of the net, and Pietrowicz, rather than dive to block with her body, tried to corral the slick ball but couldn't hang on.

The Crusaders tied the game in the 16th minute thanks to a goal from Kristen Locke. The Hawks couldn't clear a ball out of their own end, and Locke ended up taking a shot from the right side and placed the ball into the side netting.

Hartford had a good chance to take a lead into the locker room when, with 10 minutes remaining, Riemer sprung sophomore Kacey Busque on a run up the middle of the field. Busque dribbled in and slipped a shot past the keeper that rolled to the far post and bounced back into play. The teams finished the first 45 minutes tied at 1-1.

The game-winning goal came in the 64th minute after Holy Cross changed goalkeepers at the half. Guigli found herself in front of the goal inside the 18 yard box and fired a hard shot above the head of Jessica Stone. While she was in position to make the save, the ball popped through Stone's hands and into the goal for a 2-1 Hartford lead.

Guigli later added an insurance goal in the 79th minute off a feed from sophomore Brittany Black, who made her first appearance of the season after battling back from an injury. Guigli's goal was her third of the season.

Hartford controlled much of the game offensively and held an overwhelming 23-7 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper Liz Cook finished with three saves while allowing only one goal. Both Pietrowicz and Stone each recorded four saves in 45 minutes of action apiece.

Hartford will next host UMBC on Thursday, October 5 at 6 p.m. at Al-Marzook Field.
