W Soccer Holds On for 1-1 Tie at Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT ? The University of Hartford women's soccer team moved into a tie for first place in the America East on Thursday after battling the University of Vermont to a 1-1 double-overtime tie.

The Hawks (6-8-1 overall, 4-0-1 AE) remained unbeaten in conference play and are tied with 10th-ranked Boston University atop the standings. Vermont moved to 3-8-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the America East.

After a scoreless first half, Hartford took a lead early in the second stanza when junior Sara Flowers netted her second goal of the season off an assist from junior Meagan Riemer. The goal, which came off a header, was scored at 52:45.

The Catamounts answered only 21 seconds later, tying the game on a goal by Jenny Solberg at 53:06. She took a pass from Susie Cirilli and drilled a shot from 25 yards out that caught Hartford goalkeeper Liz Cook off her line and found the back of the net.

Neither team would score during the remainder of regulation or the pair of 10-minute overtime periods. However, the Hawks had to battle to earn the point, playing a man down for the final 48 minutes after Riemer received a red card at the 61:52 mark.

Cook did her part to keep the Hawks in the game, recording a season-high 10 saves on the afternoon. Vermont held a 17-14 edge in shots, including a 7-2 margin in the overtime periods. Catamounts goalkeeper Eliza Bradley finished with five saves.

Hartford will next play at Stony Brook University on Sunday, October 15 at 7 p.m.
