Hartford Volleyball Drops Home Match to Stony Brook

West Hartford, CT ? The Hartford volleyball team dropped a 3-0 conference match to Stony Brook University on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Center. The Hawks are now 7-11 overall and 0-5 in America East action. The Seawolves improve to 11-11 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

 

The Hawks were led by Jennifer Monroy who finished with 14 kills, the only Hartford player with double digits kills. She concluded the match with a .290 attack percentage (14k, 5e, 31ta). Sarah Rasor continued to marshal the Hawks offense, finishing with 24 assists, adding two kills and no errors to her record. The Hawks defense was led by Sarah Boss and Hallie Fullagar, who each finished with seven digs. Fullagar also added two kills in her first collegiate match.

 

"Although you hate taking a loss, overall I was pleased with the effort we put forth and felt that this was a step in the right direction," said Head Coach Don Ferguson.

 

The Hawks fell behind early in the first game, down 11-5, before pulling within two 12-10 on a four-point run. During the run Teri Connolly recorded back-to-back service aces. The teams traded points until the Seawolves used a four-point and five point run to pull ahead 24-18. Stony Brook scored six of the final eight points of the game to notch the first victory.

 

Again the Hawks would battle from behind, dropping to a 15-8 deficit in the second game. Hartford them put up seven of the next eight points to pull within two, 16-14. After three-straight points for Stony Brook, Hartford again capitalized with six of the next eight points to tie the score at 21. The Seawolves would side out and then record back-to-back aces from Kelli Sams before winning the second game by a 30-25 advantage on two straight kills from Noelle Bay.

 

Hartford would again need to battle from behind in the third game, falling to a 12-6 deficit. The closest the Hawks would come was three, 15-12 on an ace from Rasor. After trading points for the next 17, the Seawolves regrouped and scored the final seven points of the match.

 

The Hawks next host Central Connecticut State University on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m.
