WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford women's soccer team won the America East regular season title on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over 20th-ranked Boston University at Al-Marzook Field.
Junior Sara Flowers netted the game-winning goal in the 68th minute, her third of the season. The regular season crown was the 10th in school history and the first since the 2002 season. The Hawks are now unbeaten in their last eight games.
The win also clinched home field advantage for the Hawks at the upcoming America East Championship. Hartford will be the top seed and receives a bye into the semifinals. First round games will be played on Friday, October 27 at 3 and 6 p.m. at Al-Marzook Field. The semifinals will be held on Sunday, October 29 at 1 and 4 p.m. The Hawks will play either Binghamton or New Hampshire in the 4 p.m. game.
Both Hartford and BU came into the game undefeated in conference play. The Hawks improved to 8-8-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the America East. BU dropped to 13-4-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the conference.
After a scoreless first half in which Hartford didn't record shot, both teams opened up offensively in the second stanza. BU's best scoring opportunity came with 35 minutes remaining when Casey Brown took a cross off a corner and fired a shot that hit off the left post. The ball rebounded across the mouth of the goal, though no BU player was able to capitalize and the Hartford defense cleared the ball.
Flowers' goal came as a result of a Hartford rush that saw sophomore Brittany Black take a shot from inside the box on the left side. Her shot hit the far post and bounced straight out to Flowers. BU goalkeeper Stephanie Dreyer was out of position after diving to stop the initial shot, and Flowers had an easy putback for the go-ahead score.
The Hawks held on for the final 22 minutes to secure the victory. Junior goalkeeper Liz Cook made six saves to record the clean sheet, her fifth of the season. Dreyer finished with three saves.
