Vestal, NY - The Hartford men's soccer team dropped to 1-2 in conference play with a 1-0 loss at Binghamton in the first of two-straight road games for the Hawks. The loss, which was delayed by a weather event, puts the Hawks at 3-4-4 overall, while the Bearcats improve to 5-6-3 overall and 3-1-0 in America East action.
The Bearcats put the only score of the game on the board in the 38th minute when Peter Sgueglia connected with Bryan Arnault for Squeslia's second goal of the season. The goal was set up with a cross from Arnault which Squeslia scored from 30-yards out.
The Hawks had two shots in the first 10 minutes with the first from Oswald Adu going high and the second from Patrick Roy needing to be saved by Binghamton's Jason Stenta. The Bearcats answered the second shot with one of their own less than a minute later, but the shot from Ibrahim Yusif went high.
Stenta was put back to work in the 22nd minute when a shot from Gary Muir had to be saved. Just after the Binghamton goal the game was halted due to lightning detected in the area. Play resumed with just over six minutes playing in the first half, but the field conditions were much different than the start. Right after the restart the Hawks Matt Glaeser was forced into action, making a save on a shot from the Bearcat's Matt Narode.
Just after the halftime break, the Hawks took their first shot. Mark Cleverdon attempted a shot that went wide. Binghamton then took the next three shots before the final Hartford shot came with just under seven minutes to play in the game when Muir had his shot go wide.
“Out quality didn't match the demands put on us by the conditions,” said head coach Dan Gaspar. “We led in every statistical category, but at the end of the day, they matched the conditions better than we did, and came out with the ?W'. In the end, 'We tried to tap dance in a boxing match'.”
For the game, Glaeser finished with one save, while Stenta was forced to make four.
The Hawks will be back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Vermont for a 1:00 p.m. America East game.
