TOWSON, MD ? The University of Hartford men's basketball team tied a school record with 12 three-pointers but fell 78-64 to Towson University Monday night at the Towson Center.
The Hawks jacked up 39 three-point attempts and shot 31 percent from long range. Freshman Joe Zeglinski and junior Brian Glowiak each finished with four treys apiece.
Cold shooting hurt the Hawks early in the first half. Towson took advantage and jumped out to a 12-point lead behind a 16-3 run that ended with a pair of free throws by Tim Crossin with eight minutes to play.
The Hawks recovered thanks to three quick baskets from Zeglinski. His second three-pointer of the game trimmed the deficit back to six with five minutes to go, though Towson finished the half strong to take a 37-27 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Hawks got off to a good start in the second half behind the play of senior Bo Taylor, who played only four minutes in the first half after picking up a pair of fouls. He started the second half with back-to-back buckets and later hit a three-pointer at the 16:00 mark as Hartford narrowed the gap to four.
The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes as Towson held onto its lead. The Tigers took a 56-47 lead with 9:00 remaining on a steal and slam by Tommy Breaux that got the crowd in a frenzy. Zeglinski, however, quieted the crowd with three-pointers on Hartford's next two possessions, the second coming on a nifty behind-the-back pass from sophomore Jaret Von Rosenberg to make it 56-53.
Towson responded with a 12-3 run to push its lead back to 12 with 4:15 to play. Hartford's final push came from Glowiak, who buried back-to-back treys to cut the deficit to six with 3:06 to play. On the ensuing possession, Towson's Gary Neal responded with a three-pointer of his own, a dagger that killed any hopes of a Hawks' comeback.
Zeglinski led the Hawks with a career-high 15 points. Taylor scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and finished with a team-best eight rebounds. Glowiak scored a season-high 12 points while Von Rosenberg finished with eight points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Neal led all scorers with 20 points. Winstonn Tubbs notched a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Hartford will next play at Army on Saturday, November 18 at 1 p.m.
