Stony Brook, NY ? The University of Hartford volleyball team closed out its 2006 season with a 3-0 loss on the road at Stony Brook on Thursday evening. The Hawks close out the year with an 8-20 overall record and a 0-12 record in conference matches. Stony Brook finishes the regular season with a 13-16 overall record and 6-6 in America East play.
Hartford was led in the match by Jennifer Monroy. She finished with 11 kills and only three errors in 28 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .286. The Hawks lone senior, Teri Connolly, had the hot hand of the night with a .500 attack percentage on seven kills, only one error and 12 total attacks. Sarah Rasor, the Hawks starting setter for all of 2006 finished the game with 24 assists and 10 digs for a double double. Lauren Flores led the Hawks defense with 11 digs.
“We had many opportunities but in the end were unable to capitalize," said head coach Don Ferguson. “We played a great match but came up a little short against a team that you could tell was playing for a berth in the America East Tournament.”
The Hawks were able to tie the score three times in the first game but never able to take a lead. Hartford's final tie came at 5-5 on back-to-back kills from Erin Macro. The Seawolves never took an unrecoverable lead with its biggest coming at 16-10 on a four point run. A Hawks attack error ended the first game in favor of Stony Brook.
The Hawks were able to take a lead in the second game but one the Seawolves would take right back. The Hawks scored five straight points after falling behind 2-0 to take a three point advantage, but Stony Brook then scored five straight points of their own to regain the lead, one they wouldn't relinquish. Stony Brook closed out the second game with a kill from Amy Oleksiej.
The final game was all in favor of Stony Brook, with the Seawolves taking an early lead and never looking back. Stony Brook's biggest lead of the game was 16 points, 28-12, which came on a kill from Oleksiej.
