BOX SCORE
WEST HARTFORD, CT - The University of Hartford women's soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 3-0 win over the University at Albany on Friday night at Al-Marzook Field.
Junior transfer Meagan Riemer scored two goals and added an assist in her Hartford debut. Sophomore Kacey Busque also netted her first goal of the season. The win gives Hartford (1-0-0, 1-0-0 America East) the early lead in the conference standings.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute when another transfer, junior Sara Flowers, found Riemer streaking to the goal. Riemer faked the goalkeeper to the left and was left with an empty net for her first tally of the season. Hartford, which outshot Albany 7-1 in the first half, took the 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the break.
Riemer's second goal didn't come until the 83rd minute on an assist from freshman Laura Guigli. Busque added the third score less than two minutes later. The Hawks worked the ball up the right sideline to Riemer, who dribbled in to find Busque in the middle of the box for the goal. Junior Maja Siosteen was also credited with an assist on the play.
Junior goalkeeper Liz Cook faced only three shots and finished with two saves while recording the shutout. Hartford outshot Albany (0-1-0, 0-1-0 America East) by a 13-3 margin. Great Danes goalkeeper Ashley Neussle made four saves while allowing three goals.
