W Soccer Picks Up Win Over Army

WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford women's soccer team picked up its first non-conference victory of the season with a 1-0 final over Army Friday night at Al-Marzook Field.

Freshman Laura Guigli's first career goal was enough as the Hawks recorded their second shutout of the season. Junior goalkeeper Liz Cook made three saves and was aided by strong play by the Hartford defense.

Hartford improved to 2-7-0 and snapped a seven-game losing streak. Army dropped to 4-5-0 overall.

The first half was evenly played, though not many scoring chances were to be found on either side of the field. Army outshot Hartford 4-2 in the stanza and had its best opportunity of the game with three minutes to go before the half. Pia White split the Hartford defense and received a pass in full stride toward the goal. Her one-on-one chance was foiled by Cook, who quickly reacted to the rocketed shot to make the save.

Hartford's play in the second half was a different story. The Hawks were more aggressive on the offensive end, firing off 11 shots and putting six on goal. The barrage came primarily from junior Meagan Riemer and sophomore Kacey Busque, who finished with eight shots and three shots, respectively.

Army goalkeeper Rebecca Garcia kept the Black Knights in the game. She made five saves in the second half alone, the majority of which were stellar stops. Busque had a breakaway early in the half but was denied, and Riemer was turned away by a kick save in the 61st minute that kept the game scoreless.

The Hawks finally broke through at 68:58 when Riemer blasted a shot from the right side that Garcia was able to deflect. The rebound, however, found Guigli with room on the left side. She buried her shot into the left side of the goal for the game-winner.

Hartford outshot Army by a 13-7 margin and earned an 8-3 edge on corner kicks. Garcia finished with seven saves for the game.

Hartford will look for its first road win of the season at Fairfield University on Sunday, September 24 at 1 p.m.
