MBB Holds on Against Stony Brook

WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford men's basketball team held on for a 50-47 victory over Stony Brook University on Saturday afternoon at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.

The Seawolves had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but a three-pointer from Ricky Lucas drew iron. Hartford (9-7 overall, 3-1 America East) was led by sophomore Jaret Von Rosenberg, who scored 18 of his career- and game-high 21 points in the second half. Lucas led Stony Brook (6-10 overall, 1-3 America East) with 11 points. Each was selected as their team's Nestle Purina ONE America East Player of the Game.

Hartford trailed 25-16 at the half and by as many as 11 points in the second stanza before rallying back. A 12-1 run tied the game at 32-32 with 10:41 to go, as Stony Brook went over six minutes between field goals. The Hawks took their first lead since the opening minutes on a pair of free throws from Von Rosenberg with 8:28 remaining. Though the Seawolves would tie the score three times after that, the Hawks never again trailed in the contest.

Von Rosenberg scored 13 of Hartford's final 15 points of the game, including back-to-back buckets and a free throw with three minutes to play that put the Hawks up by six. The Seawolves then cut the deficit in half when Tre Cunningham banked in a three-pointer with 50 seconds to go. Stony Brook got the ball back with 14 seconds remaining after playing good defense and forcing a shot clock violation. Lucas took the potential game-tying three from the top of the key but was off the mark.

Hartford shot a dismal 22 percent in the first half but finished at 33 percent for the game. Stony Brook shot 26 percent in the second half and ended the game at 34 percent. The Hawks were in the double bonus for the final 8:30 of the second half and went 16-of-25 (64 percent) from the stripe for the game. The Seawolves attempted only 10 free throws and made eight (80 percent).

Senior Bo Taylor also finished in double figures for the Hawks with 13 points. Classmate Alex Zimnickas also added nine points and five rebounds while sophomore Michael Turner and freshman Joe Zeglinski each pulled down eight rebounds. Lucas was the only player in double figures for the Seawolves.

Hartford will next host Binghamton University on Monday, January 15 at 7 p.m. at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
