WEST HARTFORD, CT ? For the second year in a row, Binghamton guard Mike Gordon dropped in a buzzer-beating layup to defeat the University of Hartford men's basketball team by a 57-55 final Monday night at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
Binghamton improved to 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the America East. Hartford dropped to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Gordon and Hartford freshman Joe Zeglinski were named Nestle Purina ONE America East Players of the Game.
The Hawks trailed 55-52 following a pair of free throws from Gordon with 26 seconds remaining. After calling a timeout, Hartford inbounded the ball on the sideline and got it to freshman Joe Zeglinski. He dribbled to the corner and attempted a three-pointer, but his shot was blocked and gathered by Steve Proctor.
Proctor was fouled after he corralled the rebound and went to the line for a one-and-one. He missed the front end and sophomore Jaret Von Rosenberg came down with the rebound and brought the Hawks back up court. Junior Brian Glowiak then came off a screen at the top of the key and made a wide-open trey to tie the game at 55-55 with eight seconds to go.
Bighamton called timeout and then gave the ball to Gordon. He picked up a full head of steam crossing the midcourt stripe and then slashed his way down the right side of the lane. Sophomore Fabrice Tafo tried to draw the charge but didn't get the call, and Gordon's right-handed fling settled through the rim for the winning points with 0.1 seconds remaining.
Last season the Bearcats pulled out a last second win by the same final score when Gordon made a steal on the defensive end and then went coast to coast to beat the buzzer. He scored nine points in that game and finished with 10 on Monday. Richard Forbes (12) and Steve Proctor (11) also finished in double figures for Binghamton.
Zeglinski scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half to pace the Hawks. Von Rosenberg also finished with 16 points while Glowiak added 10. Hartford shot 35 percent for the game, including 31 percent from three-point range.
Hartford trailed by only two at the half, 29-27, after failing to score in the final six minutes of the stanza. Binghamton then extended its lead to 38-29 before the Hawks hit their first field goal of the second half with 13:45 to go.
Hartford will next play at UMBC on Thursday, January 18 at 7 p.m.
