Boston, MA - The University of Hartford women's basketball team faced the Boston University Terriers on Wednesday morning at the Case Gymnasium where the Hawks defeated the Terriers 57-42. Hartford (14-7, 7-1 America East) was led by freshman Diana Delva who finished the game with a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds.
Delva completed her second "perfect game" of the season with a 5-of-5 effort from the field and 4-of-4 at the free throw line. She was selected as the America EastPlayer of the Game for the Hawks. Hartford finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field (17-of-50) but capitalized at the free throw line with a season best 92 percent on 23-of-25.
Hartford's defense was the story of the first half holding the Terriers (10-11, 2-6 America East) to just 20 percent shooting (6-of-30) which was the Hawks second lowest shooting percentage allowed on the season. Boston University was in a drought not making a field goal for over eight minutes starting with 4:16 remaining in the first half and concluding with a jumper by Cheri Raffo with 16 minutes remaining in the second half. Offensively in the first half the Hawks were led by sophomore Katie Kelley and Delva who picked up eight points a piece. The Hawks headed to the locker room at the half with a 29-17 lead.
Despite not making a three-point field goal the big key for the Hawks was their free-throw shooting. Twelve of the Hawks 28 second half points came from the free-throw line. The Hawks also capitalized on second chance opportunities scoring ten points off of their nine offensive rebounds and picking up 26 points from their bench.
Hartford is now 11-0 when holding opponents to 50 points or less. “BU did a good job to get us out of our rhythm”, said head coach Jennifer Rizzotti. “Our kids were really tenacious and buckled down in the second half. Our bench helped us win this game more than they have all season.”
Hartford will next play Stony Brook on Sunday, February 4 at the Reich Family Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and can be seen live on Fox Sports Net.
