WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford women's soccer team salvaged a 1-1, double-overtime tie against the University of Maine on Sunday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field.
Hartford (4-5-4 overall, 2-0-2 America East) tied the game in the 61st minute on a goal by senior Meagan Riemer, and neither team could find the back of the net in the overtime periods. Maine (4-5-3 overall, 2-1-1 America East) got on the scoreboard in the first half thanks to an own goal in the 17th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Cook made seven saves while Maine's Jasmine Phillips finished with four. Maine outshot Hartford 13-12 in the game.
A Hartford foul was the impetus for the own goal. The Hawks were whistled for a foul 40 yards out, and Maine's Kim Stephenson played a ball into the scoring area on the restart. A Hartford defender tried to head the ball away but ended up putting it just inside the right post.
The Hawks' goal also came on a restart, as a Maine foul gave junior Sara Flowers a chance to serve a ball into the box from 25 yards out. After the ball bounced around inside the melee, Riemer buried a shot into the netting for her second goal of the season.
Hartford had the best scoring opportunity in overtime. With the final seconds ticking away in the first stanza, junior Stephanie D'Aurio volleyed a ball out of midair that would have found the inside of the right post if not for a diving stop by Phillips.
Hartford will next play at Boston University on Thursday, October 18 at 7 p.m.
