Men's Soccer Season Ends in Penalty Kicks

WEST HARTFORD ? The University of Hartford men's soccer team played to a 1-1, double-overtime draw in the quarterfinals of the America East Championship on Saturday night at Al-Marzook Field, though UMBC advanced to the next round by a 5-4 margin in penalty kicks.

Hartford finished the season with a 7-4-7 overall record. Fifth-seeded UMBC (8-5-4 overall) will next play at top-seeded Binghamton University in the semifinals on Wednesday, November 14 at 2 p.m.

The fourth-seeded Hawks took a 1-0 advantage in the 28th minute on a goal from junior Andreas Blamo, his team-leading seventh of the season. Senior Daniel Antunez assisted on the goal, which Blamo fired into the lower right corner and out of the reach of UMBC goalkeeper Steve King.

Hartford took the lead into the second half before UMBC rallied for the equalizer. Dan Bulls picked off a pass played back by the Hartford defense. He then beat goalkeeper Matt Glaeser with a shot to the left post for his first goal of the season.

Despite being outshot 20-14 in the contest, UMBC had the best scoring chances in each of the 10-minute overtimes. Glaeser, the America East Goalkeeper of the Year, kept the Hawks in the game with two stellar saves in each stanza and finished with six for the game. King recorded four saves for UMBC.

The Hawks fell behind in penalty kicks in the second round and could not make up the difference. Bulls took the final attempt for the Retrievers and put it inside the right post. Glaeser guessed correctly and got a hand on the shot but couldn't make the save.
