WEST HARTFORD ? The University of Hartford men's basketball team held off a late second half comeback by Army on Wednesday night to post a 70-64 victory at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
The Hawks evened their record at 4-4 overall and extended their winning streak to three games. Four players finished in double figures led by 17 points from junior Warren McLendon, who was named Nestle PurinaONE America East Player of the Game. Junior Michael Turner and sophomore Joe Zeglinski each added 11 points while freshman Morgan Sabia chipped in with 10.
Army (2-4 overall) trailed by 15 at half but rallied back to tie the game at 64-64 on a jumper by Josh Miller with 1:52 to play. After the teams traded possessions without a basket, junior Jaret Von Rosenberg put Hartford up for good with a pair of free throws with 51 seconds remaining.
Hartford stepped up its defense in the final 45 seconds. The Hawks swarmed the Black Knights on the perimeter and disrupted their offense, drawing a shot clock violation with 15 seconds to go. Army was forced to foul but put Von Rosenberg on the line again, and he sank another pair to make it a two-possession game. Zeglinski then pulled down the final defensive rebound and added two more from the charity stripe to close out the game.
Free throws were the difference in the contest, as Hartford went to the line 31 times and made 21 freebies. Army attempted only seven free throws in the game and made five. The Black Knights were whistled for a total of 24 fouls.
Hartford shot 43 percent for the game and outrebounded Army 37-28. Sabia led the Hawks on the glass with a career-high nine boards, one shy of the double-double. Turner also added seven rebounds while Zeglinski finished with five.
The Hawks, who led 35-20 at the break, used a 15-0 run midway through the first half to take control. McLendon scored eight points in the run while Turner added five, and Army went without a point for a nine-minute stretch.
Jarell Brown paced Army with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Josh Miller also finished in double figures with 16 points. Army shot 44 percent from the floor.
Hartford will next play at Long Island University on Saturday, December 1. The game time has been changed from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
