WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford men's basketball team snapped its eight-game losing streak with a 62-46 victory over the University of New Hampshire on Thursday night at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
The Hawks (10-15 overall, 4-8 America East) shot 51 percent for the game and committed only seven turnovers to hand the Wildcats (8-17 overall, 4-8 America East) their fifth straight loss. Hartford senior Bo Taylor led all scorers wtih 18 points while UNH's Radar Onguetou finished with a career-high 15 points on 7-of-7 shooting. Both players were named Nestle Purina ONE America East Players of the Game.
Hartford played its best first half of the season, putting a season-high 37 points on the board over the first 20 minutes. The Hawks trailed 15-8 in the early stages before ripping off 10 straight points, taking the lead for good on a Taylor basket and free throw with 7:47 to play in the half. Hartford held UNH without a field goal in the final seven minutes and closed the stanza on a 13-0 run to take a 37-22 advantage into the locker room.
The Hawks led by double digits the entire second half and took their biggest lead at 58-31 with 8:24 to go, as sophomore Fabrice Tafo capped a 15-0 run with a layup. Tafo finished the game with a career-high 13 points and added four rebounds. Junior Brian Glowiak added 11 points while freshman Joe Zeglinski finished with 10.
Hartford held a distinct advantage at the free throw line. Though the Wildcats didn't miss from the charity stripe in five attempts, the Hawks shot 20-of-25 (80 percent) and were in the bonus only seven minutes into the second half.
New Hampshire shot 44 percent for the game but hit only 5-of-21 (24 percent) from three-point range. Last time the two teams met the Wildcats hit a season-high 14 treys. Leading scorer Blagoj Janev came off the bench and played only 14 minutes and scored a season-low two points.
Hartford will try to make it two in a row at Stony Brook University on Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m.
