Baseball Drops Doubleheader at West Virginia

 

MORGANTOWN, WV ? The University of Hartford baseball team dropped 11-5 and 11-1 decisions at West Virginia University on Sunday at Hawley Field.

The Mountaineers (8-3 overall) heated up early in the first game with a home run from Tyler Kuhn in the bottom of the first. The play resulted in two runs as Adam White scored after having reached on a walk from Hartford starting pitcher Adam Flaherty

Jordon Yost tacked on another home run in the bottom of the third to give West Virginia a 5-0 lead. A single from Justin Parks to the right side scored Mike Schmidt and a sacrifice fly from Jason Pape sent Vince Belnome across home plate to round out the inning for the Mountaineers.

Hartford (0-3 overall) added four runs in the top of the seventh to try to close the gap. Sophomore Ben Sobocinski went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the game to lead the Hawks. Flaherty (0-1) took the loss and gave up five runs on four hits in just over two innings of work.

Flaherty dropped to (0-1) on the season as he allowed five runs on four hits in 2.1 innings on the mound. 

The second game started much like the first, with West Virginia lighting up the scoreboard with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Mountaineers led 6-0 by the time the Hawks scored their only run of the ballgame on an RBI single by sophomore Brady Stouffer in the third. Junior C.J. Browne (0-1) got the starting nod on the mound for Hartford and gave up six runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings.

West Virginia and Hartford will face off again on Monday, March 12, at Hawley Field. The contest will serve as the make-up game for game two of Saturday's doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
