WEST POINT, NY ? The University of Hartford softball team split a doubleheader at Army on Sunday afternoon, dropping the first game 1-0 before bouncing back for a 4-1 victory in the second game.
The Hawks (9-9 overall) managed only four hits in the first game and left runners in scoring position in three different innings. Army scored the game's lone run in the second inning when freshman pitcher Brittney Stratton (6-4 overall) was called for an illegal pitch with the bases loaded. She worked six innings and allowed just four hits while striking out four.
Hartford's bats came alive in the second game, led by a 3-for-3 effort from sophomore Amanda Sais. Army went ahead 1-0 in the first inning after successfully completing a double steal, though freshman pitcher Gina Massaro would be solid the rest of the way. She threw all seven innings and allowed just the one run on two hits.
The Hawks tied the game in third when Sais scored on a ball hit by senior Kristie Rochette. Hartford then plated the game-winning run in the following frame on an RBI single by sophomore Danielle Glantz, the first RBI of her collegiate career. The Hawks tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI triple by Sais, who later scored on an Army throwing error.
Hartford will next travel to Rhode Island for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
