West Hartford, CT ? The University of Hartford baseball team dropped its home opener to the Boston College Eagles on Tuesday afternoon 6-5 on the Hartford Baseball Field. The Hawks Adam Flaherty picked up his second loss of the season, pitching four and a third innings. The Hawks are now 1-13 overall and Boston College improves to 7-11-1 this season.
Flaherty allowed six runs, with only one of them recorded as earned, based on a pair of Hawks errors in the game. He allowed five of the Eagles 10 hits and struck out one batter. Bryan Bloch pitched a third of an inning in relief facing three batters and allowing a hit. Zach Stefka pitched six outs over three innings allowing two hits a walk and striking out two batters. Weston Szymanski pitched two and a third innings of relief Facing eight total batters and allowing two hits while striking out a pair.
The Hawks bats were led by Bill Perry who finished with two hits in four at bats while recording a pair of RBI. Also finishing with a multi hit game was Brady Stouffer and Ben Sobocinski, who each finished with two hits.
BC started the scoring in the first after Ryan Hutchinson reached on a three-base error to right field. He later scored on a wild pitch. Hartford answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Soboscinksi and Perry provided the Hawks two hits in the inning with Perry recording an RBI double, scoring Matt O'Connell who reached on a walk. Ryan Crowley provided the second RBI on an infield groundout, scoring Sobocinksi.
The Hawks extended their lead with a single run in the third. Stouffer started the inning with a walk and took second on a successful sacrifice from O'Connell. Stouffer then stole third and scored on a single up the middle from Sobocincski, his second hit in as many at bats.
Boston College took their first lead with a five run fifth inning. The Eagles finished the inning with four hits, three singles and a double form Michael Belfiore, which cleared the bases for three RBI. Hartford answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Andrew Dorman led off the inning with a walk and Stouffer followed with a single to right. Both advanced on the second successful sacrifice form O'Connell. Dorman scored first when he advanced home on the throw to first off a check swing ground out from Sobocinski. Stouffer then scored on the second RBI of the game from Perry who singled to right center.
The Hawks will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they take on the University of Massachusetts. The Hawks and Minutemen are scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch in Amherst, MA.
