Vestal, NY - The University of Hartford baseball team dropped both games of its double header at Binghamton University on Saturday afternoon by scores of 5-4 and 5-2. The Hawks drop to 9-26 overall and 6-8 in conference play and will close out the series with a singe nine-inning game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Varsity Field in Vestal, NY.
Chris Browne picked up the loss in relief in the first game, allowing the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pete Moraski started for Hartford and went 4.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, while striking out five batters. Browne allowed just one run in two and a third innings of work. He also struck out two batters and allowed two hits.
The Hawks loss in the second game went to starter Kyle Perry. Perry went five innings and allowed all five runs off three hits and two walks, while recording one strikeout. He was relieved for the sixth inning by Marc Toomey. Toomey pitched just one inning and recorded a strikeout, while not yielding a hit.
The Hawks bats were led on the day by Erik Price who finished with three hits, all for extra bases. He had five total at bats on the day and smacked a pair of doubles and a triple, just the eighth triple of the season for Hartford. Chris Hebert finished the day with two RBI on one hit. His only hit was a run scoring single to right center field, while his first RBI of the day came on an infield ground out.
Also finishing with multiple hits for the Hawks was Matt O'Connell, Greg Cinelli, Adam Bowser and Bill Perry. Cinelli, O'Connell and Ryan Crowley joined Hebert in the RBI column with one RBI a piece.
In the early game the Hawks tied the score in the top of the sixth inning when a two out walk to Price proved costly. With his speed he was able to score off Hebert's single in the next at bat. The Hawks fell victim in the bottom half of the seventh when a two out double to Matt Simek led to a walk-off single to left center from Pat Haughie in the next at bat.
In the night cap the Hawks were held scoreless until the seventh inning when a lead off walk and a single up the middle led to runs, but the Hawks would get no closer and suffer the loss. The big inning for the Bearcats was the third inning when a three run blast from Brendan Hitchcock put the home team up by four.
