Baseball Drops FInal of Series 9-3 at Binghamton


Vestal, NY - The University of Hartford baseball team dropped the final game of a four-game series 9-3 at Binghamton on Sunday afternoon. The sweep against the Hawks is the first of the season in conference play. Hartford is now 9-27 overall this season and 6-9 in America East action.

 

Chris Greiner suffered his fifth loss of the season for the Hawks. He started and went three and two-third innings before being pulled for Adam Flaherty. Greiner allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned). He also recorded a walk and a strikeout. Flaherty saw an inning and two-thirds of action allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits.

 

Bob Rogers came in relief and closed out the game, pitching the final two and two-third innings. He allowed one earned run on three hits, while also striking out one batter. Mike Van Gorder took the victory for Binghamton (19-12, 13-2 AE). Van Gorder (4-2 overall) started and went seven innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He was relieved by Murphy Smith and Khalid Afify, who both pitched an inning.

 

The Hawks bats were led by Brady Stouffer and Ben Sobocinski who both finished with two hits and each scored a run. Bill Perry, Adam Bowser and Chris Hebert all added a hit and an RBI for Hartford.

 

The Hawks took an early lead with two runs in the first innings. A lead off single to center for Stouffer led to the first run, when he scored on an infield error for the Bearcats. Sobocinski, who reached on a single, also scored in the first off of a single to right from Bowser.  The Hawks only other run came in the fourth inning when a lead off single for Perry would score. Hebert's single through the right side led to the fourth inning run.

 

The Bearcats scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and eighth, while posting two-run innings in the fifth and sixth. Binghamton was led by Brendon Hitchcock, who finished with four hits in five at bats with three RBI. Also recording multiple RBI on the day was Matt Simek, who finished with two.

 

The Hawks will next play at Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon in Hanover, NH. The mid-week non-conference game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
