West Hartford, CT - The University of Hartford men's soccer team picked up its second-straight 1-0 victory, this time over Rhode Island to improve to 5-1-1 overall. The Hawks only goal came in the first half off a header from Daniel Antunez off a pass from Oswald Adu. The Rams dropped to 1-6 overall.
“The fans continue to be our strongest 12th man,” complimented head coach Dan Gaspar. “It's really nice to see youth soccer players and their parents at a Division I soccer game, it will have a major impact on the development of their personal soccer game.”
The only scoring in the game came during the 17th minute when Kevin Hall initiated a pass to Adu who crossed the ball from the lower left corner of the field to the far side of the box where Antunez scored his second goal of the season off a header to the lower right corner of the net.
“We beat a very talented URI team,” continued Gaspar. “I have a great level of respect for the coaches, players and their style of play. Our team managed the game very well in the second half and as a result we able to preserve a 1-0 lead. I was very happy with my team tonight.”
The Rams had a pair of chances at the net in the 43rd minute. Both shots came from Geoffrey Cameron with the first saved by Hawks keeper Matt Glaeser who was unable to control the ball. Cameron then tried to belt a shot to the opposite corner of the net and missed wide right.
The Rams took eight first half shots compared to just one for Hartford, the only one they would need. Glaeser recorded four first half saves. In the second period, the Hawks took six shots, compared to just two from Rhode Island. Glaeser finished the game with five total saves, while Rams keeper Chris Pennock finished with two.
The Hawks will be back in action on Wednesday, October 3 when they travel to in-state rival Connecticut for a 7:00 p.m. start in Storrs, CT.
