Hawks Top Big East Foe Providence 69-50 on Tuesday Night

The University of Hartford women's basketball team cruised past the Providence College Friars Tuesday night at Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion. Hartford was led by a pair of double doubles from Diana Delva and Erica Beverly.

Delva finished the game tied for the game-high with 17 points. Also scoring 17 was Lisa Etienne and Providence's Brittany Dorsey. Delva rounded out her second double double in as many games with 10 boards Delva finished the game with an 8-of-11 effort from the field, while Etienne also excelled from the floor, shooting 7-of-11. Beverly finished the game with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her first double double of the season.

Hartford, who never trailed in the contest, jumped out to an early 16-6 lead on the Friars (1-1) after a Delva layup. That 10-point lead was expanded into a 37-21 cushion at the break with Etienne leading the way with 14 points.

The Hawks came out of the break to extend the lead to as much as 31, after a three from junior Kacey Pratt with 6:49 remaining. Until that point, the Friars were held to just eight points in the half, as Hartford used a 7-0 run to start the half and later a 12-1 run to take its largest lead.

Providence was led by Dorsey's 17 points, the only Friar in double figures. She finished the game shooting 5-of-10. Senior Chelsea Marandola added nine points and three rebounds for Providence, while sophomore Mi-Khida Hankins led the team with three blocks.

As a team, Hartford out-rebounded the Friars 42-31, and nearly doubled-up Providence in steals at a 13-7 margin. The Hawks also shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) as a team, while holding the Friars to 32.7 percentage (16-of-49). For the second game in a row, the Hawks forced more than 20 turnovers, with Providence committing 21.

The Hawks took advantage of those miscues, turning them into 21 points. Hartford also held a 22-10 advantage in points in the paint and a 19-13 advantage in second chance points, after recording 14 offensive rebounds, the second straight game with double figures for offensive boards.

Up next for Hartford is a matchup against the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils this Friday the in the DePaul Tournament in Chicago, Ill. at 6:30 p.m.
