Women's Hoops Falls at #12/13 Louisville 70-42


Louisville, KY ? The University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 70-42 decision to #12/13 Louisville on Wednesday night. The Hawks were led by Diana Delva who finished the game with 14 points, the only Hawk in double figures. The Hawks fall to 5-5 overall and Louisville improves to 8-1 on the season.

Delva's hot shooting continued, with her connecting on 6-of-7 from the field, as the team shot 36.4 percent (16-of-44) for the game. Hartford's other leading scorers included MaryLynne Schaefer and Erica Beverly with six and five points respectively. Delva also led the Hawks in rebounding with nine boards. The Cardinals finished the game with a 41-30 advantage on the boards, including 18 offensive rebounds. Angel McCoughtry led the Cardinals with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals, completing the triple double.

Hartford opened the scoring with a three pointer from Schaefer and extended that lead to 7-3 before Louisville answered with an 8-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage. That advantage would grow after a jumper from Lisa Etienne and a free throw from Beverly tied the game at 10.

Following the tie, the Cardinals opened their lead to 17-11 with 9:31 to go on a fast break steal and layup from McCoughtry. After a Hartford three pointer from Jackie Smith the Cardinals used an 11-0 run to take a 28-14 advantage with 6:08 to play before the break. That run featured three-straight three pointers, one from McCoughtry and two from Brandie Radde.

Louisville opened the lead to its largest, 37-16, on nine-straight points before Hartford scored four of the final five points in the half to go into the break down 38-20. Leading all scorers was Deseree' Byrd with 11 points. Angel McCoughtry added 10 for Louisville as Hartford was led by Beverly with four points. Hartford had eight different players enter the scoring column in the first 20 minutes.

The Cardinals came out of the break with McCoughtry scoring their first eight points of the half, extending their lead to 46-23 with just over four minutes played in the half. Louisville then extended its lead over thirty points with a 6-0 run to take a 62-28 lead with 8:49 to play in the game.

Hartford went on to scored five straight, all from Delva  including her second three pointer of the season, but Louisville would prove to strong, scoring another six-straight to take a 70-35 lead, their largest of the game. Hartford would score the final basket of the game, a three pointer from Jenna Peterson her first collegiate three pointer, in the first attempt.

The Hawks return to action on December 21 when they travel to Bowling Green, OH for a 2:00 p.m. match-up against the Bowling Green State University Falcons.
