Albany, NY - The University of Hartford women's basketball team picked up a 57-43 road win over the Albany Great Danes on Senior Night at SEFCU Arena on Wednesday night. The Hawks were led by the Nestle Purina ONE America East Player of the Game Erica Beverly who put together her sixth double double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Hawks (21-5, 11-2 AE) had a pair of players leading the team in scoring, Danielle Hood and Lisa Etienne each scored 17 points, with all of Etienne's coming in the first 20 minutes and tying her career high. Hood saw 11 of her points come in the second half. Katie Kelley picked up 10 boards, for the first time this season and fourth of her career, the second Hawk with double figure rebounds. Diana Delva also helped the Hawks in rebounding, finishing with eight boards. The Hawks combined to grab 46 rebounds, compared to 37 for the Great Danes (11-16, 9-5 AE).
The Hawks finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field (22-of-60) with three players finishing at 50 percent or just below, Beverly (5-of-10), Hood (7-of-15) and Etienne (6-of-13). Hartford's defense held the Great Danes to just 19 percent in the second half, including 1-of-12 to start the second stanza. Albany put up just 16 second half points, the lowest by an opponent in the final 20 minutes this season.
The teams tied the score six times in the first half, while trading leads on three occasions. Albany held as much as a four point lead on three different occasions, the first coming in the first three minutes at 6-2. Following a Hawks 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game, the Great Danes answered with six of their own, unanswered, to pull ahead by a 14-12 margin with 8:21 to play before the break.
The Great Danes final lead of the game was a 19-16 advantage, following a Britney McGee free throw with 7:14 to play in the first half. The Hawks answered that lead with an Etienne three pointer, beginning an 8-0 run, which ended on a Jamie McCabe three pointer. The run gave Hartford a five point advantage, and would include the final lead change of the game.
The Hawks took a 32-27 advantage into the break, led by Etienne's 17 point first half tying her career best in just 17 minutes on the floor. Hartford came out of the break and scored 10 of the first 12 points to pulling ahead by double digits 42-29, with 10:25 to play.
Albany would only get as close as a 10 point deficit, following a three pointer from Gia Sanders, the only three pointer of the game for the Great Danes who shot seven percent from the field (1-of-15). The Hawks took a 16 point lead with 4:49 to play and saw its biggest lead of 18 points with 2:23 remaining in the game. That lead came after five-straight points from Hood.
The Hawks will return to Chase Arena for their next game, welcoming Maine on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The game is the first of two-straight, the final two home games of the regular season.
