Softball Off to Good Start at Rebel Games

KISSIMMEE, FL -- The University of Hartford softball team extended its winning streak to four games with victories over Dayton and Army on Sunday on the first day of play at the Rebel Spring Games.

Sophomore Brittney Stratton and freshman Amanda Singer picked up the wins inside the circle for Hartford (5-1 overall). Stratton allowed one run--her first of the season--over seven innings in a 3-1 decision over Dayton. Though her scoreless innings streak was snapped after 18.2 innings, she struck out a season-high nine batters and gave up only four hits to improve to 3-0 on the season. Singer picked up her second straight win in a 10-1 final against Army. She struck out two and allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings.

The Hawks scored all three of their runs against Dayton with two outs in the first inning. Consecutive hits by sophomore Olivia Piacentini, sophomore Rachel Clonick and junior Kristen Cericola plated runs and staked Hartford to a 3-0 lead. Stratton took care of the rest, though she worked out of bases-loaded jams in the second and sixth innings. Dayton scored its only run in the sixth when Stratton hit a batter with the bases loaded. The Flyers had a chance to tie the game in the seventh with runners on the corner, but Cericola made a running over-the-shoulder catch in center field to end the game.

Eight of Hartford's nine starters recorded hits against Army in the nightcap. Senior Alex Morley singled and doubled to drive in two runs while junior Kayla Demarest went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cericola also added two hits and an RBI while Clonick plated a pair of runs.

Hartford will continue play at the Rebel Spring Games against Siena and Colgate on Monday.
