Baton Rouge, LA - The University of Hartford women's basketball team kept has done it again; the Hawks secured a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 59-55 win over the Syracuse Orange in Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday afternoon. Hartford was led by MaryLynne Schaefer who scored a career high 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including four three pointers and a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line.
Schaefer was one of two players in double figures with Lisa Etienne adding 10 points. Erica Beverly also shined with six points and eight rebounds to go along with career highs of six assists and four steals, while blocking three shots. Hartford shot 34.5 (20-of-58) percent for the game, including a 40.1 percent (11-of-27) second half. Hartford finished the game with 17 assists in 20 total shots.
The Orange stayed in the game with their free throw shooting, finishing 21-of-24 at the line. Erica Morrow led Syracuse with 17 points, while Chandrea Jones scored 12 points and 12 assists for the double double.
The Hawks defense held Syracuse to 27.6 percent (16-of-58) from the field but allowed the Orange to grab 47 rebounds, compared to 33 for Hartford. Beverly's eight rebounds led the Hawks, while Etienne grabbed five.
Hartford will face the Texas A&M Aggies on Monday with a time to be determined following tonight's New Orleans regional games at Baton Rouge.
