Hawks Fall in second Round, 63-39 to Texas A&M

Baton Rouge, LA - The University of Hartford women's basketball team couldn't contend with Texas A&M's defense, which forced 25 turnovers as Hartford was eliminated from the 2008 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship 63-39 on Monday night. The Hawks close out the 2007-08 season with a school record 28 wins and six losses.

Hartford was led in its final game by senior Danielle Hood, the only player to finish in double figures with 13 points. Hartford struggled to find the basket in the first half with just six baskets in 22 attempts (27.3 percent), while committing 12 turnovers. Also scoring well for the Hawks was Lisa Etienne with eight and Erica Beverly who finished one point shy of a double double, nine points and 10 rebounds, leading all players.

The Aggies defense continued the pressure in the second half forcing 13 turnovers, finishing the game tying the season high of 25. Texas A&M turned the Hawks turnovers into 30 points, while Hartford forced just 10 turnovers and scored four points off those turnovers.

 

A&M saw 32 of their points come in the paint, with Danielle Gant leading all scorers with 22 points. Also in double figures for the Aggies was Morenike Atunrase with 13. A&M shot 44.4 percent for the game 24-of-54. Texas A&M's defense also held Hartford without a three point basket for just the second time this season.

 

The Hawks advanced to the second round for the second straight time in the NCAA Tournament defeating Big East member Syracuse in the first round. This season's senior class, Hood, Courtney Gomez and Jamie McCabe, has played in the postseason all four years, three of those in the NCAA Tournament. The seniors also won an America East Championship in each of their four years, three regular season titles and three tournament titles.
