Hamden, CT - The University of Hartford baseball team split a pair of games at Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks dropped the first game of a double header 5-4, before winning 6-4 in the nightcap. The Hawks were led on the day by Matt Walker who finished 3-for-6 at the plate, while knocking in four runs. The Hawks are now 6-11 overall.
Marc Toomey suffered the loss in the first game after allowing the game winning run in the eighth inning. Toomey entered with a 4-3 lead, inheriting a runner at first, and gave up a two run home run to left field. Toomey pitched just three outs, and allowed one run on one hit, while striking out one. Kyle Perry started the game and worked a seven inning no decision. He allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits, while working three strike outs.
Offensively, the Hawks were led by Adam Bowser who finished as the only player with a multi hit game, 2-for-3. Six other players finished with one hit. Bowser also scored a run. Four players finished with an RBI, Ben Sobocinski, Bill Perry, Matt Walker and Simon Kudernatsch.
In the nightcap, the Hawks took an early 6-2 lead, following a four run fourth inning. Bowser led the inning off by reaching on an error, one of two in the inning. He would eventually be caught stealing. After Drew Sgro was hit by a pitch, he took advantage and stole second, only to score on a Rodger Wilmot single. Wilmot took second on the Bobcats throw home. Wilmot scored when Simon Kudernatsch reached on a error and a Bill Perry walk put runners at first and second. Both runners then scored on a double to center field from Walker.
The Hawks first two runs came after the first four batters reached. Sobocinski started the game with a single and advanced to second on the next batter, Kudernatsch's hit bastman. The two advanced on back-to-back walks, the second scoring Sobocinski. Kudernatsch then scored on a successful sacrifice fly from Walker.
Walker led the Hawks at the plate with a 2-for-2 effort and three RBI . Three other players finished with hits, while Wilmot and Mike Amendola both finished with RBI's. Pete Moraski picks up the win on the mound. He started and last five and one-third innings. He allowed four runs, three of them earned, on 10 hits, while striking out five batters.
Also seeing time on the mound was Zack Tarner and Justin DiConzo. DiConzo pitched the final inning and a third allowing no runs on one hit and a strike out.
The baseball team returns to campus and welcomes the Connecticut Huskies to West Hartford on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
