BOSTON ? The University of Hartford softball team finished with a split at Boston University on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game 1-0 before bouncing back for a 4-1 win in the second game.
Hartford (15-10 overall, 4-6 America East) managed only one hit in the first game but scored four times on seven hits in the nightcap. Sophomore Brittney Stratton threw every pitch of the doubleheader and combined to allow two runs (one earned) on seven hits over 13 innings. She also struck out eight without issuing a walk.
In the first game, Hartford's lone hit came in the fourth inning off the bat of sophomore Olivia Piacentini. BU scored the game's only run in the fifth on an RBI single by Tyler Benson. It was enough for Terriers' starter Cassidi Hardy, who allowed only four batters to reach base in a complete-game shutout.
The Hawks got back in the win column in the second game. After BU scored a run in the first to take the early lead, Hartford tied the game in the second on an RBI double by sophomore Ann Kyzer. Junior Kristen Cericola, who led off the frame with a double as well, scored on the play.
The Hawks took the lead in the third inning on a two-out, two-run homer by sophomore Rachel Clonick. Hartford later tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double by freshman Lauren Kamena.
Stratton had all the run support she would need and only hit trouble in the fifth. BU had runners on second and third with two outs, but the Hartford right-hander got a ground ball to end the threat. She allowed only three hits over seven innings and struck out two to improve to 11-4 overall.
Hartford and BU will wrap up the three-game series with a single game on Sunday, April 13 at noon.
