Stony Brook, NY - The University of Hartford baseball team was held to just six hits in the last of a four-game series against the Stony Brook Seawolves on Sunday, dropping a 5-4 decision. The Hawks loss goes to Justin DiConzo who stands at 0-2 on the season. As a team, the Hawks are 12-15 overall and 6-2 in America East play.
Stony Brook (16-14, 5-3 AE) put the first run on the board with a lead off home run over the right field fence for Brian Witkowski. Hartford took its first of two leads with a three run third inning. Brady Stouffer led things off with a walk and advanced to third on Ben Sobocinski's double to center field. Simon Kudernatsch picked up the first run with a successful sacrifice fly to right field, while Bill Perry provided a double to score the second run. Perry scored later in the inning on Mike Amendola's single to left.
The Seawolves answered with two runs in the fifth to tie the game, while Hartford took a one run lead in the sixth. Adam Bowser was the first runner of the inning, working a walk with two outs. He scored on the next at bat, a double down the right field line from Adam Grap. Stony Brook scored a single run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game and then Keith Fier made a lead off single in the bottom of the eighth inning pay off scoring the game winning run. Winning pitcher, Jeremy Nowack forced the final three batters for Hartford to fly out, ending the Hawks chances at a four-game sweep.
DiConzo was one of four pitchers for the Hawks. Kyle Perry started for Hartford lasting four and one-third innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out two batters and walking three. CJ Browne pitched one inning of relief. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out one batter. DiConzo pitched two total innings allowing one run on four hits, while striking out two. Marc Toomey closed things out for the Hawks sitting down the only two batters he faced to end the eight inning.
The Hawks will play a pair of midweek games, the first at Connecticut on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., the second at Rhode Island at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
