FAIRFIELD, CT ? The University of Hartford softball team was shut out at Fairfield University on Thursday afternoon, falling 8-0 in five innings at Alumni Softball Field.
Hartford (15-14 overall) managed only three hits off Fairfield starter Kelli Panter, who struck out eight and walked two over five innings to pick up the win. Fairfield (15-20-1 overall) finished with eight hits and was aided by three Hartford errors.
The Stags used three hits and two errors to score four runs in the bottom of the first to take control. Erin Frank and Jenna DiBernardo each had two-out RBI doubles in the frame off Hartford starter Amanda Farnan. Fairfield added a run in the third on an RBI double by Meghan Borst and two more in the fourth on a two-out homer by DiBernardo. The Stags plated their final run in the fifth to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule.
Farnan (0-2 overall) threw five innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking one. Sophomore Amanda Dilworth and juniors Amanda Sais and Kristen Cericola each had singles for the Hawks.
Hartford will next host Albany for a three-game series this weekend. The Hawks and Great Danes are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
