LAX Loses at UMBC

 

BALTIMORE ? The University of Hartford lacrosse team suffered a 16-5 loss at sixth-ranked UMBC on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

UMBC (9-3 overall, 4-0 America East) won its eighth straight game and clinched the top seed in the upcoming America East Championship. The Retrievers have also won 11 straight home games, the second-longest home winning streak in the nation. Matt Latham and Bobby Stockton each finished with hat tricks while Ryan Smith added two goals and two assists.

Hartford (0-12 overall, 0-4 America East) may still be in the running for a berth in the championship, depending on the results of tomorrow's conference action. The Hawks will remain in the hunt with an Albany win over Vermont.

UMBC got off to a quick start, scoring five times in the opening quarter to take a commanding lead. Hartford got on the scoreboard less than three minutes into the second quarter when freshman Michael Cudmore found junior Jacob Eustice for a score. The Retrievers answered with two more goals to take their biggest lead of the half at 7-1.

The Hawks narrowed the gap by scoring three goals in the final 6:23 of the half. Freshman Rob Nosworthy to Hartford going with an unassisted tally, followed by a man-up goal from senior Tom Harris on a feed from Eustice. Eustice then netted his second goal 18 seconds before the halftime buzzer to pull the Hawks to within 7-4 at the break.

UMBC ended any thought of a Hartford comeback with a four-goal third quarter. The Retrievers continued to increase the lead in the final quarter with the first four goals of the stanza. Hartford finally broke the string on a shot by freshman Evan Bryant, his second goal of the season.

UMBC outshot Hartford 48-20 for the game and won 13 of 24 faceoffs. Junior goalie Jon McMahon finished with 13 saves while Jeremy Blevins (five saves) and David Coker (2 saves) split time between the pipes for the Retrievers.

Hartford will close out the regular season against Binghamton University on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m.
