The University of Hartford volleyball team dropped two matches on the opening day of the West Point Classic, both three set matches, to the host Black Knights ( 14-25, 11-25, 17-25) and #5 USC (10-25, 11-25, 18-25). The Hawks are now 3-9 on the season and will close out the West Point Classic with a 2:00 p.m. match against Dartmouth College on Friday.
Hartford dropped its first match by scores of 14-25, 11-25 and 17-25. The Hawks never held a lead in the match and tied the score just three times in three sets. Junior Hallie Fullagar led the Hawks with five kills, followed by junior's Maddison Molyneux and Erin Macro, both with three kills. The Hawks struggled to hit the entire match, combining for a -.016 attack percentage as a team (16 kills, 17 errors, 64 total attacks). Freshman Lindsay Makowicki led the team in hitting with two kills with no errors in four total attacks for a .500 attack percentage.
Sophomore Lindsay Ford led the team in assists and defensively. She finished with 11 assists and seven digs. Following Ford in the digs column was freshman Danielle Etta and junior Sarah Boss with five and four digs respectively. The Black Knights finished the match hitting .439 from the field (46 K, 10 E, 82 TA).
Fullagar again led the Hawks against USC, finishing with six kills. She was followed by Mollyneux with five and freshman Michelle Cordell with four kills. As a team, the Hawks hit -.053 for the match with 22 kills, 26 errors in 75 total attacks. USC hit .273 for the match with 31 kills, 13 errors in 66 total attacks.
Fullagar also led the team in the digs column where she finished with seven. Just behind her was Boss with six and Etta with five. Ford again led the Hawks in assists with 16 total. Macro excelled on the block against USC, finishing with five total blocks, one solo and four assists.
