Hawks Fall On the Road at Boston University 76-65


Boston, MA ? The University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped its first America East conference game at Boston University 76-65 on Wednesday night The Hawks fall to 8-8 on the season and 3-1 in conference action, while the Terriers improve to 11-6 overall and remain undefeated in AE play, 5-0.

The Boston University win marks the second-straight season the Hawks have fallen victim to BU on the road, it is also the most points allowed by the Hawks in a conference game since a loss to Stony Brook during the 2004-05 season (L, 74-80).

 Hartford was led by America East Player of the Game Diana Delva who finished with 17 points. She shot 8-of-10 for the game. Erica Beverly was the only other player in double figures with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The Hawks finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field (23-of-52) but allowed the Terriers to shoot 52 percent (26-of-50) on their home court.

All nine of the Hawks players who saw action scored at least three points and grabbed at least one rebound in the game. Also scoring well for the Hawks was Ilicia Mathis and Lisa Etienne who both finished with eight. The Hawks also dropped the battle of the boards 30-32, led by Beverly and Delva with six rebounds each.

The Terriers opened the game with an 11-2 run before Delva battled to pull Hartford within three, scoring the first nine points on four layups and a free throw to trail 11-9 with 13:38 to play in the first half. After a Boston University free throw the Hawks took their first lead of the game on back-to-back layups from Beverly. The lead would change twice more before the break with Hartford taking a 34-31 advantage into the break, the largest lead Hartford would hold in the game.

The Terriers came out of the break and took the lead back quickly scoring the first two baskets of the half a layup from Jesyka Burks-Wiley and a jumper from Ali Hinton. It would be three lead change and two ties later before the Terriers regained the lead with 13:40 to play on a pair of Burks-Wiley free throws. Those two free throws led to nine-straight for the Terriers, opening up a 53-44 lead with 11:27 to play.

The teams traded baskets for the next five minutes before a 6-0 run gave Boston University a 13-point lead, 68-55, one the Hawks would not be able to battle back from. Hartford would only get as close as nine in the final minutes.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, welcoming the Stony Brook Seawolves to Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
